How to Use the PDF Auto-Scroll Feature?

1

Load PDF File

Click on the "Choose or drag PDF file here" area in the center of the page, and select a local PDF file. We use pure client-side local rendering technology; your documents will never be uploaded to any server, ensuring complete confidentiality and security.

2

Auto-Scroll & Fine-Tuned Speed Control

Auto-scroll is enabled by default once the PDF is loaded. You can adjust the speed using the decrease - or increase + buttons in the control bar (default is 50 px/s, increments of 10 px/s, ranging from -400 to 400). Positive numbers scroll down, negative numbers scroll up, and setting it to 0 pauses the scrolling.

3

Keyboard Shortcuts (Windows & Mac)

For desktop reading, you don't need to use your mouse constantly. Simply hold down the key combinations with the arrow keys to adjust the speed smoothly. If auto-scroll is disabled, adjusting the speed will automatically activate it:

Ctrl + ↑ (Windows) / ⌘ Command + ↑ (Mac) or : Speed Up / Scroll Down
Ctrl + ↓ (Windows) / ⌘ Command + ↓ (Mac) or : Slow Down / Scroll Up

PDF Auto-Scroll Guide & FAQ

How to auto-scroll in Chrome & Edge built-in PDF viewers?

Many users wonder, how do I enable auto-scroll when opening a PDF directly in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge? The reality is that most mainstream browsers' built-in PDF viewers do not support native auto-scroll.

Although some browsers allow a simulated scroll by "clicking the middle mouse button (scroll wheel) and dragging down," this approach has significant downsides: controlling the speed precisely is incredibly difficult, making it easy to lose your reading flow, and the slightest mouse movement or click stops it instantly, causing hand strain. Moreover, installing third-party Chrome auto-scroll plugins or extensions poses security risks by requesting access to sensitive web data, and mobile platforms (Android / Safari on iOS) cannot run extensions at all.

To solve this problem completely, we recommend using our online PDF Auto-Scroll tool. It requires no plugins or downloads, features zero security risks, runs entirely locally in your browser, supports macOS and Windows shortcuts, and provides a smooth scrolling experience on Android and iPhone devices alike.

Common Use Cases for PDF Auto-Scroll

🎼 Musicians & Sheet Music Reading

When playing the piano, guitar, violin, or saxophone, musicians must keep both hands on their instrument. By loading PDF guitar tabs or piano scores and setting a slow auto-scroll speed, you can play continuously without the interruption of manual page turning. It serves as a perfect free alternative to physical page-turner pedals.

📚 Novel & E-Book Reading

Reading long PDF novels, e-books, or long-strip webcomics in bed on a phone or tablet requires constant swiping due to narrow screens. With auto-scroll turned on, you can read without lifting a finger, minimizing thumb and wrist strain.

🔬 Researchers & Academic Document Review

Teachers, students, financial auditors, and legal professionals regularly digest academic papers, manuals, financial reports, and contracts spanning dozens or hundreds of pages. Auto-scrolling at a comfortable reading pace helps maintain focus, allowing you to pause, highlight, and copy key passages at any time.

💻 Developers & API Reference Check

When referencing huge API specifications, manuals, or engineering schematics, using slow, fluid scrolling lets you scan reference material on a secondary screen while coding, drastically boosting development and debugging efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does this online PDF reader compromise my privacy?
No, not at all! This tool is powered by 100% client-side local rendering. When you load a PDF, the file is read only into your browser's local memory and rendered using the pdf.js engine. No data bytes are ever uploaded to our servers, so you can safely open confidential or private documents.
Can I scroll the PDF backward (reverse auto-scroll)?
Yes, absolutely! The tool supports bidirectional scrolling. By default, positive speeds (e.g. 50) scroll downward. If you need to re-read previous sections or scroll from bottom to top, simply click the decrease button or use the shortcuts to set a negative speed (e.g. -30 px/s), and the document will scroll upward smoothly.
Are there any mobile tips for Android and iOS?
On mobile browsers, simply toggle the "Auto Scroll" switch to start. For an immersive, app-like reading experience, we recommend using your browser's sharing/settings menu and selecting "Add to Home Screen". This allows you to launch the reader in full-screen standalone mode, hiding the browser navigation bar.
Why do some large files take longer to load?
Because all rendering happens locally on your device's CPU and memory. PDFs containing high-resolution images, complex vector schematics, or hundreds of pages require significant rendering computation. We recommend reading large files on higher-spec devices or waiting a few seconds for the initial local parse to finish.
