PDF Color & B&W Page Splitter - FAQ & Tech Guide

Here you can find answers to frequently asked questions about PDF page color detection, noise filtering, large file optimization, and privacy security.

Page Color Detection & Fine-tuning

Why are some scanned black-and-white pages detected as color pages? How to fix it?

This is because many PDF pages scanned using physical scanners or mobile cameras look black and white visually but contain minor color deviations at the pixel level (e.g., yellowish tint or color noise generated by camera/scanner sensors). By default, our tool is highly sensitive and might judge these minor variations as color pixels.

Solution: Before uploading documents, you can increase the "Pixel Saturation Threshold" (e.g., from the default 20 to 30 or 40). This instructs the program to ignore minor color noise and only identify high-purity color areas as color pixels. You can also slightly increase the "Color Pixel Ratio Threshold" to filter out small-area discolorations. For details, refer to PDF Page Color Identification & Classification Step Guide.

Do I need to re-upload my file after modifying the thresholds or ratio parameters?

No. The settings trigger different response mechanisms:

  • If you adjust the "Color Pixel Ratio Threshold", the tool doesn't need to reload the PDF because it has already saved the color pixel ratio of each page. The list and page stats will be re-calculated and refreshed instantly.
  • If you adjust the "Pixel Saturation Threshold", the page pixels need to be re-sampled. However, you do not need to re-upload your file. Simply click the yellow "🔄 Re-detect Colors" button at the top to re-evaluate the pages in-memory.

Compatibility & Performance

Does the tool support both native text PDFs and scanned image PDFs? What's the difference?

Yes, both are fully supported. Our tool is compatible with both mainstream PDF types:

  • For native text PDFs (exported from Word, Excel, etc.), the pages contain clean vector fonts. The detection is extremely fast, highly accurate, and rarely causes misjudgment.
  • For scanned image PDFs (photocopies or compiled photo books), the content consists of raw image data. The tool renders a low-resolution canvas for analysis and applies pixel-difference algorithms. By adjusting saturation thresholds, scanned documents can also be split with high accuracy.

Will the browser crash, freeze, or run out of memory when processing very large PDF files?

Processing very large PDF files with many high-resolution images can consume massive amounts of system memory when rendering and encoding Canvas images (using Data URLs). To prevent this, we developed the "Show Page Preview (Thumbnails)" switch.

For large PDFs with hundreds of pages, we strongly recommend disabling the "Show Page Preview" switch. Once turned off, the program skips thumbnail image generation and data conversion during color analysis. This saves hundreds of megabytes of browser RAM, increases speed by over 10%, and prevents memory-related tab crashes. When saving, the backend splitting algorithm still extracts and merges the correct pages, without affecting the output PDF quality.

File Security & Privacy

Is my confidential contract, invoice, or bidding document secure? Will it be uploaded?

100% Secure. This page runs entirely on local web technologies. Document loading, color detection, preview rendering, and splitting/merging are executed within your browser sandbox. No file data is uploaded to any server.

Because the process is completely local, the tool works perfectly even offline without any internet connection. Your sensitive contracts and financial documents are never exposed.
